IBC 2023 – New Solutions for Storage, Comparing, and Sharing

If there’s one overarching theme for our IBC product announcements this year it’s “Frame.io meets you where you are.” And that’s why we can’t wait to meet you in Amsterdam to show you, in person, what we’ve been working on since we saw you last year.

The Frame.io vision has always been to empower creatives so you can work more efficiently and stay in the creative flow. For this IBC, we’re releasing new features and announcing partnerships designed to help teams customize their workflows to accommodate the ever-increasing demand for new content across every segment of the industry.

The headlines: You can now connect your own enterprise cloud storage to Frame.io; our improved side-by-side comparison viewer now supports videos, images, PDFs, audio files, and design files, making it even easier to review (and approve) your assets; and we have new Camera to Cloud integrations for video and photography teams.

Of course, we’ll be in the Adobe booth so you can check out the new features and improvements to Premiere Pro and After Effects, too. If you’re already a Creative Cloud subscriber, there’s so much new to love. And if you’re not (yet), this might be the time to try them out.

Introducing Frame.io Storage Connect

Many of you work in large organizations with hundreds, or even thousands, of users. This announcement is especially for you.

Frame.io Storage Connect now lets customers with Enterprise plans attach your self-governed AWS S3 storage to Frame.io. With Storage Connect, when you upload media to Frame.io on a computer, a mobile device, or through Camera to Cloud, your original assets and media will travel directly to your organization’s storage. Frame.io automatically generates and stores all of your proxies and metadata in our cloud so creatives and stakeholders have the same lightning-fast access to them. The best part is that the Frame.io user experience is no different from what you’ve come to expect. Uploading, transcoding, navigating, and sharing operates just as it did before—with 100 percent performance parity.

The Frame.io user experience is no different from what you’ve come to expect.

With no change in how (or how fast) you work, your org can easily scale and make petabytes of pre-existing media available to as many users as you like. Enterprises can use Frame.io while staying in sync with their company’s standard operating procedures, security protocols, and governance. Storage Connect also allows customers to control their storage costs by connecting their own affordable AWS S3 storage directly to Frame.io. Our solutions architects will even help you configure and test this new flow. You can also book a demo here

Over time, more clouds will become available, along with advanced features like deduplication. If you’re part of an organization in which security, governance, scalability, and cost savings are paramount, you can learn more about Frame.io Storage Connect here.

Enhanced review and approval

An increasing number of our customers create content for a vast array of purposes from broadcast to brands. That’s why we’ve refreshed our review and approval tools for creators who work with a wide range of assets and need to compare them.

The side-by-side comparison viewer that debuted for images and photos at NAB 2023 newly supports video, PDF, and audio assets. Now, all Frame.io users can compare any two matching asset types with access to commenting and annotations, keeping you in the conversation as you carefully consider two different assets, or versions of an asset.

Until now, comparing two PDF or audio assets side by side wasn’t possible and when comparing videos users were unable to access comments or annotations. This improvement to comparisons provides more nuanced review and approval capabilities for creatives and stakeholders who need to work faster and more efficiently.

There’s also a new feature that allows you to compare any two matching assets in a folder by using the right-click menu. And, as always, you can compare two matching assets in a version stack.

With this improved workflow it’s now easier to review all the assets associated with a deliverables package, from videos and one-sheets to sound effects and online catalogs, while ensuring that all your collateral—no matter the format—looks consistent.

C2C: Atomos, Fujifilm, and Accsoon

Our partnership with Atomos last year has already enabled timesaving Camera to Cloud workflows for sports teams, news outlets, broadcasters, and live-event producers. For IBC 2023, we’re thrilled to announce that the new Atomos Ninja 5” HDR video monitor and recorder and Ninja Ultra succeed the Ninja V and Ninja V+, respectively. In addition to a fresh new look, they have powerful new features for Atomos users and both are C2C compatible with the existing Atomos Connect module.

But the Ninja Ultra brings several important (and much-requested) upgrades to C2C users. First, the Ninja Ultra has the ability to record up to 4K ProRes RAW directly to the device while simultaneously uploading lightweight HD proxies to Frame.io for quick editing and easy relinking. Or, for those who don’t want to offline and online, the Ninja Ultra is also capable of locally recording and uploading high-quality, lightweight 4K clips up to 60p directly to Frame.io as soon as the camera cuts—no relinking necessary. Also, matching filenames over SDI from popular ARRI, Canon, RED, and Sony cameras allows for a simple OCF (original camera file) and Atomos recorded proxy workflow.

As a reminder, the Atomos Shogun Connect (an all-in-one integrated device) and the Zato Connect (the ultra-affordable monitor/streaming unit), both of which we introduced in 2022, are still popular, available, and C2C compatible.

Meanwhile, our partners at Fujifilm are building on the award-winning in-camera integrations with Frame.io that we introduced at NAB 2023; they’re adding the brand-new 102MP large-format FUJIFILM GFX100 II (pronounced GFX100 the second) to the family of Camera to Cloud-supported cameras.

Its predecessor, the large-format GFX100, is the camera of choice for many portrait, landscape, and architectural photographers. Now, with the GFX100 II, creators can access the Camera to Cloud workflow without needing additional accessories like the battery grip/WiFi module required for the FUJIFILM X-H2 and X-H2S.

The GFX100 II boasts a 55mm CMOS II HS sensor (11648 x 8736 pixel), and can send 102-MP RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and HEIF photos directly to Frame.io. It also handles 422 10-bit 8K ProRes HQ video up to 30p and 4:2:2 12-bit 4K ProRes HQ video up to 60p. Utilizing an external recorder, GFX100 II can capture 4:2:2 12–bit ProResRAW and Blackmagic RAW, extending its video capabilities.

New to the Camera to Cloud family is Accsoon, who unveils the SeeMo and SeeMo Pro devices. Both allow videographers, journalists, and news teams to use iPhones or iPads as professional video monitoring devices with features similar to those offered by Atomos, BlackMagic Design, or SmallHD.

The SeeMo, ideal for mirrorless cameras, attaches to cameras via HDMI. The heavier-duty SeeMo Pro attaches via HDMI or SDI and is perfect for ENG and mid-range cine cameras. With the new C2C integrations both allow you to monitor, record, and upload lightweight HD H.264 video clips from your connected iPhone or iPad directly to Frame.io.

These devices provide an alternative for broadcasters, newsrooms, and sports teams who need a simple way to connect distributed camera teams or journalists to post-production—whether for instant video editing or expediting content destined for social media.

Updates to Premiere Pro and After Effects

Speaking of expediting the content-creation pipeline, there are big updates to Premiere Pro and After Effects designed to increase speed and stability.

AI-powered Text-Based Editing has already earned the prestigious Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) Award for Engineering Excellence. Originally released in May, it makes editing video as simple as copying and pasting text.  The newest updates, featured at IBC, take the functionality a step further by removing filler words like ums and uhs with a single click, and allowing you to work with multi-channel audio files. There’s also a new de-noising feature that improves the quality of voice recordings so dialogue sounds as if it was recorded in a professional studio.

A newly simplified color workflow includes higher-quality tone mapping, consolidated settings in Lumetri, and improved LUT management and relinking—there’s even a gamma fix for Quicktime. All of this makes it easier for you to produce your best work without extra, complicated steps.

Adobe has been taking the feedback of Premiere Pro users to address some of their top requests. The Premiere Pro timeline is now 5x faster, and the new Effects Manager lets you quickly troubleshoot and find incompatible plugins to improve system stability. There are also a number of smaller (but highly useful) improvements like new project templates, custom export locations, the ability to preserve folder structures as bins on import, new MOGRT management tools, and more.

The highlights for After Effects include true 3D compositing and motion graphics with the ability to import, texture, light, shade, and render 3D models inside of After Effects. And the innovative new Sensei AI model, combined with Roto Brush improvements and mask refinement tools, lets you cut out objects faster and more accurately—even when they contain hard to isolate elements such as overlapping limbs, hair, and transparent objects. There are also improvements for motion-graphics designers like updated presets and proportional guides.

Work the way you want to

At a time when there are so many new technologies and systems, Frame.io is more committed than ever to providing the platform that lets you work the way you want, using the tools you love. We’re here to integrate into your workflow by allowing teams of all shapes and sizes to centralize their assets and their feedback, no matter where in the world they are.

So we hope you’ll let us meet you at IBC. We’ll be in Hall 7, booth #7.B35 to answer your questions and learn more about you. We know that no two workflows are exactly alike, so we want to help you find the right solutions for your particular needs! And if you’re at the show, it’s not too late to book a meeting with us for a private look at our new product announcements.
