Insider Tips: Quickly Reframe Vertical Video in Final Cut

Every week, Frame.io Insider asks one of our expert contributors to share a tip, tool, or technique that they use all the time and couldn’t live without. This week, Reuben Evans shares how to use Smart Reframe in Final Cut Pro to create vertical video from standard timelines.

More and more editors are being asked to ship vertical versions of videos in addition to widescreen versions. Final Cut Pro now includes a Machine Learning feature called Smart Conform that will speed up the process of conforming your standard timeline into a vertical one.

How to use Smart Conform to reframe vertical video in Final Cut Pro

To create a vertical version of your timeline, create a new timeline (Cmd+ N) and select the Vertical option under Video.

Then, paste the clips from your previous timeline into it. Select the clips and choose Modify->Smart Conform. Final Cut Pro will analyze and reframe your clips to put the action in the middle.

You can easily adjust framing on a shot by shot basis. Also keep an eye out for graphics like lower thirds. Those you’ll probably have to manually adjust.
